The above inscription reads  “In Memory of the dead.  This monument has been erected to the memory of the officers and men of the 4th Battalion Cork No1 Brigade the Irish Republican Army who gave their lives in defense of the Irish Republic from 1916 to 1922 Requiscant in pace Grateful thanks to you for placing this monument at the entrance to this town where we speak with affection of the men who died in the battle for freedom.”
